Should I open a credit card?

The question

I am 24 years ancient and I have honest credit. I recently was denied a car refinance based on my credit score/report. I have three things on my report: my perfect car loan, a credit card charge off that won’t come off until 2013, and a paid as agreed student loan. I need to bring up my credit score/report. I know that opening a credit card will help but I am unsure of opening one since that is what brought down my report in the first place. Granted, I was 18 and was not smart. Now, I would use it very small and keep up with payments. I just don’t know if it is a the smartest thought. HELP!

A new form of credit will lower your score for the first 6 months.
A much better thought is to forcefully pay off that current card loan if the interest rate is too high. Had to mention it since some people are not aware that you can pay off a loan early.

Also careful with that charge off.
These collection agencies tend to sue you right before the statute of limitations is up. Have some money in savings in case this happens so you can negotiate a settlement before it goes to court

I agree with Huntsman…don’t play around with that charge off. Take a look at this site.
It will give you info about what you’re currently going through.
